Hewlett Packard offer a wide variety of laser printers & inkjet printers from all-in-one printer/scanners suitable for office use to home-based options such as affordable ink and laser printers. Your choice of printer will come down to several factors: The size of paper you intend to use (A4/A3/photo size) The number of copies you require whether it be one off prints or larger volumes The quality of print – high quality photo or fast printing mono documents The speed of print: The all-in-one printer/scanner is also an option for home users who wish to scan photographs into digital files or copy documents. Some HP printers also offer automatic 2 sided printing so if you do a lot of 2 sided prints then these models can save much time. For simple office requirements where the user needs only to print A4 mono documents, the recommended models are the HP Laserjet 1022 or the HP Laserjet P1505 (also P1505n). For photo reproduction without the need to scan, the HP Photosmart D5160, HP Photosmart D5360 and HP Photosmart D7160 are ideal choices. Those users who require a scanning option for their photo reproduction should consider the HP Photosmart C4280, HP Photosmart C5280 or HP Photosmart C5180. Office users who require all-in-one solutions should look no futher than the HP Officejet 4315, the HP Officejet J5780 or the HP Officejet 5610. Remember, to get the best out of your Hewlett Packard printer, follow these steps: Use the ‘print preview’ option before printing any document to make sure everything will appear as planned (‘draft’ mode printing can also be used to make a hard copy for preview purposes). Print in black and white wherever possible to reduce costs. Turn your printer off between long periods of printing. Use the ‘print properties’ option to control the quality of print to your needs. Printing in lower quality will save ink on print jobs which don’t require high detail. If you experience paper mis-feeds the first thing to check on is the paper itself. If the paper has been in the inkjet printer or laser printer for a considerable time without using the printer, I would suggest that you replace the paper. If you have recently bought cheap paper on special offer and the laser printer or inkjet printer misfeeds again it could be the paper, not all 80gsm paper is the same. If it does misfeed, throw away the offending sheet as the pick up rollers could have made the surface of the paper shiny which would prevent it feeding through. Also check the paper path for small objects or small bits of paper.Paper must be stored in a stable environment, it is not a good idea to store it in a cold or especially damp area. Paper types For Laser printers Caution: Laser printers use a substance called toner which is contained in a replaceable toner cartridge. Laser printers use a thermal process to fuse the laser printer toner from the laser printer toner cartridge onto the paper - So . . . . Do not use paper designed for ink jet printers in laser printers, types include: inkjet glossy or matte paper, thermal fax paper, art paper, aluminium foil, carbon paper. these types of paper can damage a laser printer as the coatings themselves are often plastic based and can make a mess of the laser printer fuser (heater) Do not use bent, folded or creased paper, torn paper, slippery paper, perforated paper, acetate/ohp paper that is designed for inkjet printers or rough papers. For Ink Jet printers, although standard economy photocopier type paper works perfectly well in ink jet printers, it was not designed for these types of printers. Photocopier paper can have a relatively high moisture content, which is not a problem when the paper is used in a photocopier or laser printer, as the process involves a heater or fuser unit to melt the laser toner cartridge contents actually into the fibres of the paper. With an inkjet printer, printing large images or photographs the quality is often poor if using standard laser printer or photocopier paper. For regular text printing using an inkjet printer, although it bleeds (known as wicking) a little, it is usually more than acceptable for draft copies. If you want presentation documents the answer would be a quality coated paper designed for ink jet printers or for photographs a glossy or matte coated paper. If you find the ink does not dry quickly enough I would suggest you have bought inferior paper rather than an ink problem. We at Computers Unlimited, supply all types of laser printer, photocopier & inkjet printer paper including Jettec inkjet printer paper, which we would highly recommend. HP (Hewlett Packard), Canon or Epson inkjet printer paper is also ideal, although the cost is considerably higher. Paper thickness can also play a part in quality. Most photocopy paper is 80gsm but a 100gsm paper would be recommended for a formal document ie: a CV or similar. If you are printing photographs a thin glossy paper would be 140gsm a medium would be 180gsm and a quality thick paper would be 240gsm or more. If you are following the above guide relating to paper, then the paper feed rollers inside the laser printer or inkjet printer may have become shiny with use & need cleaning with a mild abrasive to restore the frictional properties of the rollers.
These are useful guides that will help you get the best out of your printers. From making sure that your ink goes as far as it can, to the cost difference between laser and inkjet printers, we’ll try to help you understand the complicated world of printing.
